Mesozoic of Rajasthan

Mesozoic sequence of Rajasthan was deposited in Jaisalmer basin. It has several cycles of transgression and regression phases. It begins with Lathi formation of Jurassic age. The sequence is important in the view of its fossil content and transgression and regression events.

⍆ Lathi formation : This formation shows deltaic facies of Jurassic age. Wood fossils are common.

⍆ Jaisalmer formation : Limestone and shows transgression facies. Ammonoids are common. Age is Jurassic. 

⍆ Baisakhi formation : Sandstone lithology. Age is Jurassic.

⍆ Badasar formation : Sandstone lithology. Age is Jurassic. It show regression facies.

⍆ Parihar formation : Cretaceous age transgression facies.

⍆ Abur formation : Cretaceous formation regression facies. Gorur and Prah fm are also reported.

Hydrocarbon Potential

This is category 1 basin, i.e. economic extraction of hydrocarbons is being done here. All the formations of Jurassic are proved to have oil.
