Paleogene of Himalayas


Paleogene succession of Himalayas lies to the north of MBT and has been divided into three formations viz. Subathu, Dagshahi and Kasauli.



Subathu Formation

Subathu is the oldest one which overlies Indus formation (Marine origin). It represents the facies of marine transgression. The age is paleocene - eocene. Common minerals are pyrite, gypsum and laterite.


Dagshahi Formation

It ranges from eocene to lower oligocene. It is of freshwater origin. 

Kasauli Formation

It ranges from lower oligocene to mid miocene. Deposition was taken place in brackish water. It contains some important plant fossils, common one is Sabal major. Unio bivalve fossils are also present.
