What is Ophiolite?
Ophiolites
Large sheets of mafic to ultramafic rocks.
- Found at the ancient
subduction zone or mountain orogeny (after erosion)
- UM peridotites has major rocks
as; Harzburgite, Dunite, subordinate amounts of Lherzolite, wherlite and pyroxenite.
- Mineralogy is dominated by olivine,
opx, cpx and lesser amounts of plagioclase + oxides (magnetite, ilmenite
and chrome rich spinel)
- Represents mantle up to 7km
only.
