Distribution of Mica in India
World’s
best quality mica comes from India and the workable deposits have been recorded
mainly from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. The occurrences of less
significance are noted from the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, West
Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.
The geological distribution is given in the table
below:
Formation

Geological
Details
Precambrian, predominantly mica-schist besides
calc-granulite and gneisses, hornblende-schist, micaceous quartzite and
conglomerate.
Bihar Mica-belt.
The potential areas are around Koderma, Domchanch,
Giridh and Chakai.
Isolated occurrences in Palamau, Ranchi, Dhanbad
and Singbhum districts.
Bihar
The mica pegmatites are localized mainly in
mica-schist and micaceous quartzite, and rarely in hornblende-schist.
Biotite schist and hornblende-schist interbanded
with minor quartzite, feldspathic-schist etc.
Nellore mica-belt.
The main deposits are at Kalichedu, Thalpur and
Gudur in Nellore district.
Andhra
Pradesh
Mica bearing pegmatites are most frequent (70%) in
biotite-schist and other rocks.
Pre-Vindhyan metasediments intruded by granites of
different ages.
Rajasthan mica belt
Rajasthan
The pegmatites carrying mica are commonly
intrusive into steeply diping muscovite-biotite-schist, dolerite and
calc-silicate rocks.
Archean gneisses
Nilgiri
Tamil Nadu
The pegmatites carrying mica are intrusive into
Gneisses.
Charnockite and leptynite
Madugula
Tamil Nadu
Irregular pockets of phlogopite are formed at the
contact of pegmatites with charnockite and leptynite. The deposits are not of
much significance.
Peninsular gneissic complex
Mysore and
Hassan district
Karnataka
The distribution of mica in pegmatites is very
erratic.
Calc-gneisses, dunite and norite
Neyoor and
Punaloor
Kerala
Phlogopite mica is concentrated at the
contact of pegmatite with calc-gneisses and dunite.
Gneisses and Schist
Bankura and
Purulia Districts
West Bengal
Not economically significanct.
