Bauxite
BAUXITE
Bauxite is a major ore of aluminium which is extensively used in industries of aircraft manufacturing, electrical and kitchen ware industries.
Mineralogy
Typical minerals of aluminium present in bauxite are
Al content in bauxite varies. Water content is lowest in diaspore. General reaction which form Gibbsite is
Properties
Bauxite mineral is formed by residual weathering processes which cause pisolitic habit in it.
Origin
Bauxite deposits are of residual origin. They form at or near the surface by weathering of alumina rich rocks. The rainwater breaks down rock silicates in some specific conditions. Conditions require are following
Source rock - Alumina rich source rock such as granite, syenite and basalt.
Climate - Humid tropical to sub tropical where rainfall is abundant.
pH - Basin conditions favours.
Topography - Flat terrains to permit slow downward infiltration.
